Overview
The Osage orange is the tree that fenced the prairie, and up close it reads as all hard edges. Before barbed wire, farmers set the seedlings in tight rows and pruned them into a dense living wall that was, in the old saying, horse-high, bull-strong, and hog-tight. A member of the mulberry family, it carries stiff, straight woody thorns along its lower branches, each hard spine standing out from the twig.
The fruit is the part that stops the eye. Female trees drop heavy globes the size of a grapefruit, yellow-green and knobbed across the whole surface with a brain-like, wrinkled texture, the famous hedge apples. Cut one open and pale, sticky flesh shows inside, bleeding milky sap along the blade. The flowers that precede them in early summer are small, green, and quiet, easy to overlook against the leaves.
The wood beneath the bark is as dense as the fruit is heavy. This tree lays down some of the most rot-resistant wood in North America, hard and tight-grained, and it grows fast into a broad, thorny crown. Those stout spines and the knobbed fruit are why most planted trees are smooth-branched, thornless, fruitless male cultivars.
Care
The short version: it wants full sun and almost any soil, water while young, then nothing. Once its roots take hold in the ground, this hard-wooded, thorny tree thrives on plain neglect.
Light
The tree holds its densest, fullest form in full sun, packing the crown with leaves. It tolerates partial sun and light shade, but a tree in the open grows heavier, and it arms its sunlit branches with the longest, hardest thorns.
Water
Young trees need water while the roots reach down. Once established the tree is deeply drought tolerant and takes dry and wet ground in stride, so a gap between waterings anywhere from a week to three leaves it unbothered.
Soil
The roots grip almost any ground. The tree takes poor, dry, clay, sandy, shallow rocky, and even alkaline soil across a pH from 6.0 to 8.5, and it thickens fastest on rich, moist, well-drained bottomland.
Temperature
Cold and heat barely mark it. The hard wood rides out winters down to about -29°F (-34°C) and summers up near 100°F (38°C), a span that keeps it standing across the middle of the country.
Humidity
Plain outdoor air suits it, with no number to track. The tree grows across a wide range of climates without any concern for moisture in the air.
Feeding
The tree rarely needs feeding. Fertilizer stays off unless growth has clearly stalled, and then a single balanced slow-release feed in spring covers it.
Pruning
Pruning runs from late winter into the dormant season, when the bare branches show their structure, to cut out dead, crossing, or low thorny limbs and to shape the crown. Gloves and eye protection go on every time, since the thorns are stout and the latex sap irritates.
Repotting
The tree seldom stays in a pot for long. A nursery seedling moves on once its roots circle, escape the container, or push water straight through, and it goes into the ground before it stalls.

The tree grows large, 30 to 60 feet (9 to 18 m) tall with an even wider spread of 35 to 50 feet (11 to 15 m), into a broad, dense crown. It needs open room well clear of buildings, walks, and overhead lines.

Osage orange is a slow project that lasts a lifetime. Seed starts in late winter after a soak or a chill, young trees go out in spring once frost has passed, the small greenish flowers open in June, and the heavy knobbed fruit ripens on female trees through September and October.

Troubleshooting
This tree rarely sickens, so the problems come from its own hard parts rather than any disease. The stiff thorns, the heavy dropping fruit, and the milky sap account for nearly every complaint. Match what you are seeing below and handle it before it becomes a nuisance.
Hard woody spikes ripping cloth and pricking skin up close
Set into the leaf axils of the sun-lit branches are stiff, straight, woody thorns up to 1 inch (2.5 cm) long, and their hard points snag cloth and prick skin at close range. Heavy gloves, eye protection, and thick sleeves stand between those spines and the skin during pruning, and stripping out the low thorny branches clears away the worst of them. A thornless male cultivar carries smooth, spine-free wood in busy spots.

Raw, pink, itching skin where the milky white sap has dried
Snap a stem or slice the fruit and a thick, milky latex sap beads up white along the wound, and that sap is what leaves skin flushed and itching. A wash with soap and water lifts the sticky film, and clean hands stay off the eyes until the residue is gone. Long sleeves and gloves put a layer between skin and the white bleed from the start.

Bumpy green globes strewn beneath the canopy every autumn
Each fall the mature female trees let go of dozens of dense, grapefruit-sized globes, yellow-green and knobbed all over, that thud down and roll into piles under the canopy as a slip and impact hazard. Raking them up as they land keeps the ground clear, and female trees set back from walks, drives, and parking keep the heavy drop away from foot traffic. A fruitless male cultivar skips the bumpy harvest entirely.

Toxicity
There is little to fear here. Osage orange is not on the ASPCA's toxic lists, and the bitter, pulpy hedge apple, for all its reputation, poisons no pet, person, or livestock. The one real caution is the milky sap, which can redden and irritate skin or a chewed mouth, and a whole dense fruit large enough to choke a grazing animal.

Cats Safe
No poison sits in this tree, so a cat that rolls the knobbed fruit across the floor is unharmed. The white, sticky sap is the only catch, and it can leave a chewed mouth or paw a little raw.

Nothing in the tree is toxic to dogs. The fruit is dense and stringy inside, so a whole one swallowed by a small dog can lodge as a blockage, and the milky sap may sting a mouth that gnaws the tough rind.
Horses Safe
Feeding studies found no poison in the heavy green fruit, and the horse apple nickname aside, it does horses no harm. A whole globe can still jam in the throat, so choking, not toxicity, is the risk.
Rabbits Safe
Nothing in the leaves or fruit is toxic to rabbits. The sticky white sap can irritate a tender mouth, so the bitter flesh is not a treat worth offering.
Livestock Safe
The old reports of hedge apples killing cattle proved false once researchers tested the fruit. The dense globe poisons nothing, yet a whole one can choke an animal that bolts it, and the latex may irritate the mouth.
Birds Safe
The tree holds no poison for birds. Most pass over the hard, close-packed fruit anyway.
People Safe
No part of this tree poisons people, and the bitter, pulpy fruit stays off the plate. The milky sap is the one caution, since it can redden and irritate skin or the mouth on contact.

Most trees sold for yards are named male clones with smooth, thornless wood and no fruit. These are the ones worth asking for.

Myths
The bumpy green fruit, left lying around a room, drives away every spider and insect.
It is the tale told most often about this tree, and it does not hold up. Iowa State researchers found that compounds pressed from the fruit can repel insects, but only at concentrations far above what the green, pulpy globe actually holds. A whole hedge apple sitting on the floor does nothing to the insects around it.
The brain-textured fruit carries a poison that endangers people and pets.
The pale, bitter flesh is inedible, which likely seeded the rumor, but it is no poison. Feeding experiments put the old story of hedge apples killing cattle to rest. The only real danger is a whole fruit choking a grazing animal, not anything toxic packed inside it.
