Overview
Sneezeweed opens its daisy flowers as summer fades, each bloom a warm disc ringed with petals in yellow, orange, bronze, and red. The flowers ride at the tips of the stems, and late-season bees and butterflies work over their faces. This North American native of wet meadows and streambanks belongs to the aster family, and its odd name has nothing to do with allergies at all.
The plant builds a tall, upright clump that climbs to 3 to 5 feet (91 to 152 cm) in a good spot, its slim stems rising in a dense stand. It is remarkably tough, hardy down to zone 3, and it insists on one thing: soil that never dries out. Set in a damp, sunny corner, the clump thickens and returns fuller each year.
Height is the trait to watch on this plant. Left in rich ground the stems shoot up thin and lean over after a storm, sprawling out of shape. A cutback in early June keeps them short and bushy, so the stand stays dense and upright instead of loose and toppled.
Care
