Overview
Run a finger over a ripple peperomia leaf and you meet the source of its name: a surface deeply furrowed and quilted, crimped into ridges and hollows across each heart-shaped blade. A member of the pepper family from the forests of southeast Brazil, it holds its leaves thick, firm, and semi-succulent. Indoors the plant stays small, only 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 cm) tall and about as wide.
Color is where the cultivars part ways, running from deep emerald green through rich burgundy red to leaves washed with silver. Some forms carry a deeper wine tone on the undersides, hidden beneath the green upper surface. Now and then the plant sends up narrow flower spikes in a pale cream, rising on thin stalks above the foliage.
That thickness is not just for looks. The plump, water-holding leaves carry their own moisture, which is why soggy soil turns the stems soft and the whole plant limp. Kept in bright light and watered only as the soil dries, the plant holds its firm, crimped leaves and tight, mounded shape for years.
Care
The short version: bright indirect light, a porous well-draining mix, and water only once the top half of the soil has dried. Keep the watering light and the air humid, and the thick, textured leaves stay firm and full.
Light
Bright indirect light from an east or south window keeps the leaves deeply colored and firm. The plant takes medium light and, briefly, low light, but in dim corners the stems stretch and the surface color pales. Direct hot sun scorches the foliage, marking the crimped leaves.
Water
Let the top half of the soil dry before watering again, since the thick leaves hold a reserve of moisture. Overwatering is the main cause of decline, softening the stems from the base. Pour off the saucer after each drink, keep water out of the crown, and water less through fall and winter.
Soil
A porous, well-draining peaty houseplant or cactus mix lets water pass straight through. Where the watering runs heavy, extra perlite opens the mix further and keeps the roots from sitting wet.

Feeding
Feed monthly in spring and summer with a diluted liquid houseplant fertilizer, or scatter slow-release granules once a year. Through fall and winter, when growth slows, feeding stops.
Pruning
Snip away any old or damaged leaves as they show. A stem cut just above a leaf node branches from that point, thickening the mound into a fuller, bushier shape.
Repotting
The plant is slow to fill a pot and can stay in the same one for several years. Move it up a single size only when roots push from the drainage holes or the soil dries far too fast.

Troubleshooting

A mushy, blackened base under a slumping plant
When the stem base turns soft and blackened and the plant slumps, root and crown rot has set in from soggy soil or water pooled in the crown. Below the surface the roots go dark and slimy in place of firm and pale. Stop watering, cut back to clean, healthy tissue with sterile tools, and repot into fresh, fast-draining mix. If the crown is past saving, a few firm leaf or stem cuttings carry the plant forward.

The real cause is the watering, since both a soaked pot and a long dry spell drive the leaves this way.

Cut the stretched stems back above a node and the crimped, colored leaves return on a compact plant.

Dark spots marking the leaf surface
Discrete dark spots that appear once the leaves have stayed wet are fungal leaf spots, marking the crimped surface. Pick off the spotted leaves, water at the soil so the foliage dries quickly, and give the plant more air around it. Since the fungus needs wet leaves to take hold, dry foliage is the whole of the prevention.

Toxicity

Ripple peperomia is toxic to cats and dogs, as many houseplants are.
