Overview
Pin oak carries deeply cut leaves, each blade slashed into pointed lobes by broad, rounded sinuses, and it sits among the easiest and fastest oaks to grow across the eastern states. It belongs to the red oak group and climbs 50 to 70 feet (15 to 21 m) on a single straight central trunk. From that trunk the crown builds a broad pyramid, and the branches sort themselves into clear tiers: the lower limbs sweep down toward the ground, the middle ones reach out level, and the upper ones angle up toward the sky, a stacked outline that stands out even on a bare winter tree.
In autumn those cut leaves turn a deep red to bronze and stay clenched on the twigs well into the cold, and young trees hold their brown dead leaves clear through winter, a trait called marcescence. In April, as the new leaves push out, the tree hangs slender yellow-green catkins that are easy to miss. Its rounded acorns follow, small and brown, ripening over their second autumn.
The one thing the tree insists on is acidic ground. Pin oak wants acidic soil and pales to a sickly yellow on alkaline sites, the blade bleaching between its still-green veins. Set it in the right soil, in full sun, with open room for that wide crown, and it grows fast and asks for little more.
Care
The short version: full sun, moist acidic soil that drains, and room for a wide, deeply branched crown. Water young trees through their first few years, keep the pH on the acidic side, and prune only in the dormant season.
Light
Pin oak wants full sun, a good six hours or more a day, to grow fast and burn its cut leaves to their deepest fall red. It tolerates partial shade, but a crowded or shaded tree grows thin and leggy, its canopy sparse, and it never colors as it should.
Water
Young trees need steady watering through their first few seasons while the shallow roots take hold, and again in any real drought. Once settled, the tree handles consistently moist ground and even short spells of flooding, a trait carried from its wet-bottomland home.
Soil
Soil is what shows in the leaves. Pin oak needs moist, acidic soil with a pH between 4.5 and 6.5, and it adapts to clay or sand as long as the ground isn't limy. On alkaline soil the blades bleach pale between green veins with iron chlorosis, so test before you dig.

Crisp brown scorch creeping in from the leaf margins, worse yearly
The damage begins as a dry, brittle brown rim along the leaf edge, often fringed by a soft yellow band where the brown meets the green, and it eats inward and worsens summer after summer. That advancing scorch is bacterial leaf scorch, caused by Xylella fastidiosa, and no cure exists once it takes hold. Steady water and a mulch ring keep the tree in leaf while the most burnt limbs come out, and a lab test tells the bacterium apart from a plain drought burn that can mimic the same crisp margins.

- No cure; manage by maintaining tree vigor with water and mulch

Wilting leaves turning bronze quickly, fatal within one season
The leaves go limp, take on a dull bronze cast, and rain down fast, and a full crown can empty this way in a single midsummer. That collapse is oak wilt, a fungus that slips tree to tree through grafted roots and hitches on sap beetles, and it can finish a red oak in one season. Severing the root grafts between neighboring oaks cuts the underground path, infected trees come out at once, and the saws stay off the oaks from April through July, when a fresh cut draws the beetles to the wound.

Leaf blades gone yellow between sharply green veins, worst on new leaves
When the blade between the veins bleaches to pale yellow while the veins themselves stay a sharp green, the leaf is showing iron chlorosis, and in bad cases the thin margins brown and curl inward. On pin oak the trigger sits in the soil rather than in the tree, since ground above pH 7 locks the iron away and the youngest, freshest leaves pale first. Elemental sulfur worked into the soil brings the color back for good, while iron chelate greens the foliage sooner but only for a while.

Gnarled, horned woody lumps bulging from the twigs
Hard, rounded knobs and horned lumps rise straight out of the twig wood, some smooth and swollen, others spiked. These are oak galls, grown by horned and gouty gall wasps as their larvae develop inside the branch. They ride a healthy tree with little cost, so they are best left in place, though a few galled twigs can be cut out where the knobs crowd a branch. Spraying does nothing against them.

Pin oak is grown for shade, but the small brown acorns, the swelling buds, and the young leaves all carry tannins that are toxic when eaten. Cats Mild
A cat that bites into a smooth brown acorn or a crisp fallen leaf may drool, vomit, or turn from its bowl for a day. Cats rarely swallow enough to be badly hurt, but the tannins still leave the gut sore.
Dogs Mild
Dogs are the ones that crack and swallow the fallen acorns, which brings on vomiting, loose stools, and a flat appetite. A whole rounded acorn can also wedge in the gut, so a small dog that has been nosing the lawn is worth watching.
Horses Severe
Horses that graze the acorns or the young leaves in quantity face real harm, first as belly pain and constipation that can turn to bloody diarrhea. The tannins can go on to scar the kidneys, so keep horses fenced off a dropping oak through autumn.
Rabbits Caution
The same tannins that trouble other grazers make the leaves and acorns a poor, risky nibble for rabbits, so keep both out of the hutch and the run.
Livestock Severe
Cattle, sheep, and goats can be poisoned when they gorge on fallen acorns or swelling buds, and a heavy feed drives kidney failure that proves fatal. Hungry stock on bare pasture are most exposed, so move them off the oaks during a heavy acorn drop.

Many wild birds crack the shells and eat the nut inside with no trouble, but the raw tannins are still hard on the gut, so acorns are no safe treat for a pet or backyard bird.
People Caution
Raw acorns taste bitter and drying from the tannins, and swallowing the hard nuts can churn the stomach, so no one eats them straight. Traditional acorn flour is safe only once the tannins are leached out through repeated rinsing.

Varieties
Most pin oaks sold are the straight species, with its wide, low-swept crown, but a couple of named forms exist for spots where that spreading, drooping habit causes problems.
Green Pillar ('Pringreen')
A slim, columnar form whose narrow upright crown slots into tight spots and street-side beds a full, spreading head could never fill.

Myths
Pin oak is named after the pin-like lower branches it keeps year-round.
The name more likely points to the crowd of small, slender dead twigs and short stubs left standing when the shaded lower branches die back. The tree does keep its low, drooping limbs, and young ones grip their brown dead leaves all through winter, a trait called marcescence. The pins are the spur-like dead twigs, not the living branches.

Leaves that bleach pale between sharp green veins are almost always iron chlorosis, brought on by high soil pH that shuts iron away from the roots. General fertilizer or extra water does nothing for that pale blade. The real fix is lowering the pH or adding iron, not feeding the tree harder.
