Overview
A peach tree opens its spring with a rush of pink blossoms along bare branches, then trades them for soft summer fruit that ripens from about mid-June through mid-September depending on the cultivar. A member of the rose family, it grows fast into a broad, spreading crown that reaches 15 to 25 feet (4.6 to 7.6 m) tall and about as wide, though pruning keeps most trees lower. That early pink bloom, thick on the twigs, is worth the tree on its own.
The fruit hangs heavy and round, its skin flushed and fuzzed, cradling a hard, deeply wrinkled stone at the center. The tree suits USDA zones 5 through 9, where it gathers the winter chill those flower buds need yet escapes the deepest cold. The catch in colder gardens is a late frost that can brown and drop an early bloom, so a cold-hardy cultivar and a sheltered spot matter.
This is a hands-on tree rather than a plant-and-forget one, all slender leaves and vigorous shoots that crowd inward if left alone. Light
A peach wants full sun, the more the better, to color and sweeten the fruit and to dry the damp off its leaves that would otherwise breed disease. Plant it in the most open, sunniest spot you have, well clear of buildings and taller trees that would drop shade across the crown.
Water
Soak the tree deeply every 7 to 14 days when rain runs short, and keep it up through the first two years and while the round fruit is swelling on the branch. What a peach won't forgive is wet feet at the roots, so sharp drainage counts for far more than steady moisture.

A peach roots best in well-drained sandy loam, since standing water rots those roots faster than almost anything else. Aim for a soil pH of 6.0 to 7.0, close to neutral, where the tree draws up its nutrients most freely.

Troubleshooting
Most peach trouble is fungal or bores into the wood, and it leaves visible marks: puckered spring leaves, rotting fruit, or gummy sap low on the trunk. Catch these early and the tree shrugs them off. Match what you see below, then act while it still helps.
Brown rot spreading across blossoms and ripening fruit
Brown rot, the work of Monilinia fungi, browns and collapses the blossoms, then spreads across the ripening fruit as soft patches dusted with tan-gray tufts of spores, until each peach shrinks to a hard, wrinkled mummy still clinging to the twig. Those mummies hold the fungus over to next year, so pull them off with any infected wood. Open the canopy for moving air, then coat the tree with fungicide at bloom and again as the fruit takes on color.
Fix:
- Remove mummies and infected tissue, improve air flow, and apply fungicide at bloom and as fruit ripens.
Gummy sap and frass at the base of the trunk
Beads of clear, gummy sap oozing at the soil line, streaked with sawdust-like frass, mark the peachtree borer at work, the pale larva of the clearwing moth Synanthedon exitiosa boring through the bark and the wood beneath. Left alone, those larvae chew a ring around a young trunk and drain it. Watch the trunk base all season, pry out any larvae you find, and time labeled trunk treatments to when the moths are on the wing.

Reddened, puckered, curling new leaves in spring
New spring leaves that come out swollen and rubbery, blistered along the surface and washed in red before they pucker, curl, and drop, are showing peach leaf curl. The fungus Taphrina deformans drives it whenever spring runs cool and wet. The cure rides on timing more than labor: a single dormant fungicide laid on before the buds break usually stops it, with a second spray only when the spring stays soaking wet.

- Apply a dormant fungicide before bud break; one application usually controls it, with a second in very wet years.
Toxicity
The soft ripe flesh is safe and delicious, but the rest of the tree, the slim leaves, the twigs, the bark, and the hard pit, is genuinely dangerous to animals. Those parts hold cyanogenic glycosides that release cyanide, and wilted, limp leaves are the worst of all. Keep prunings, fallen foliage, and discarded pits well away from dogs, cats, horses, and grazing livestock.

The slim leaves, the twigs, and the hard wrinkled pit all hold cyanogenic glycosides that release cyanide, so a cat should never chew them. A poisoned cat shows gums flushed brick-red, pupils blown wide, and breath coming labored and panting before it slides into shock. The soft ripe flesh is harmless, but a swallowed pit can choke a cat or lodge in the gut.
Dogs Toxic
A dog gnawing the leaves, the twigs, or a cracked pit takes in cyanide from the same glycosides. Look for mucous membranes flushed bright red, heavy panting, breathing that comes hard, and a sudden slump into weakness. The smooth, stony pit is its own hazard, since dogs swallow them whole and they wedge in the intestines.
Horses Toxic
Wilted leaves, gone limp and darkened, are the sharpest danger to horses, because that drooping foliage gives up cyanide fastest. A grazing horse can fall within minutes, nostrils flared, gums brick-red, legs staggering under it before it collapses. Set fencing well clear of prunings and any branches a storm tears down.
Rabbits Toxic
The narrow leaves, the bark, and the thin twigs all carry the cyanide-releasing compounds, so a rabbit must not nibble any of them. In so small a body, even a scrap can bring on labored breathing and a swift collapse. Offer nothing more than the odd bite of soft, pitted flesh, and keep every clipping out of the hutch.
Livestock Toxic
Cattle, sheep, and goats meet the greatest danger when wilted peach leaves, curled and browning, blow into a pasture after pruning or a storm. Grazing that fallen foliage can set off fast cyanide poisoning, with gasping breath, mucous membranes gone red, and, at worst, sudden death. Clear cut branches well away from any grazing ground.
Birds Caution
The leaves, the twigs, and the pit carry the same cyanogenic glycosides, so keep birds off those parts. A morsel of soft ripe flesh is a fine treat, but the hard pit and the kernel sealed inside it are not. Offer only pitted fruit, and never let a pet bird pick through cuttings.

The ripe peach, soft and fragrant, is a summer staple and good to eat. The wrinkled stone within is best left whole and never cracked for its kernel, since that seed and the leaves hold cyanide-releasing amygdalin. Teach children to set the pit aside rather than bite into it.

You need two peach trees to get fruit.
