Overview
The Asian pear is a hardy rose-family fruit tree, grown across East Asia long before it ever reached Western orchards. It answers to a string of names, from nashi to apple pear, and that second name reads right off the fruit: a round, firm globe that stays crisp and juicy instead of softening like a European pear, so you bite it firm straight from the branch.
This is a long-lived tree rather than a quick crop. Set out a young one and it digs in fast, then bears for decades once it settles. It withstands real cold, down to roughly -20°F (-29°C), and brushes off summer heat, which suits it to much of the temperate world.
The single demand it makes is a partner. Almost every variety needs a second compatible cultivar in flower at the same moment to set a true crop, so plan on two trees from the first. Give them sun, space, and an open shape, and they largely tend to themselves.
Care
The short version: full sun, deep well-drained soil, and a second compatible variety close by for pollination. Soak the tree deeply while it establishes and while the fruit swells, prune to an open multi-trunk frame in late winter, and thin the young pears so the limbs hold the load.
Light
Asian pears crave full sun for the cleanest fruit and the fewest disease troubles. A little afternoon shade is tolerated, but a tree buried in deep shade grows weak and crops poorly.
Water
Soak the tree deeply and regularly while it establishes and right through the spell when the fruit is swelling, provided the soil drains freely. Pull back as the pears mature, and again once the tree sinks into winter dormancy. Deep, spaced-out soakings serve it better than a daily sprinkle.
Soil
Plant it in deep, well-drained ground, be that loam, sand, or even clay, so long as water keeps moving through. A faintly acidic pH of 5.9 to 6.5 sits well with the tree, and free drainage counts for more than hitting an exact number.
Temperature
This is a tough, cold-hardy tree that rides out winters near -20°F (-29°C) and summer heat up to about 95°F (35°C). The true hazard is not deep cold but a late spring frost that strikes the open blossom.
Humidity
Plain outdoor air in the 40% to 70% band is fine, so there is no figure to manage. Warm, wet weather at bloom is what to watch, since that is when fire blight travels fastest.
Feeding
Feed in spring with a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer, split across a couple of doses. Scale the amount to the tree's age, roughly a third to a half cup per year up to about 8 cups, and stay light, since heavy nitrogen feeds fire blight.
Pruning
Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant, cutting off about 10 percent of the terminal spurs each year to keep the fruit sizing up. Train it to several trunks in an open form rather than one central leader, so a single fire blight strike cannot claim the whole tree. Hand-thin the young fruit 14 to 40 days after the petals drop, down to one fruitlet per spur or about 6 inches apart, or the weight will snap the limbs.

Most trouble with an Asian pear narrows down to one disease and a handful of pests. Fire blight is the one to respect, because it can kill the tree outright, while the insects mostly cost you fruit or vigor. Match what you see below, then move before it spreads.
Shoots turn black and hook over like a shepherd's crook
Those blackened, curled shoots are fire blight, a bacterial disease that surges through the limbs in warm, wet bloom weather and runs harder where nitrogen is high. Cut the dead, scorched-looking shoots away well below the blackened tissue, hold back on feeding, and shape the tree to several trunks so one strike cannot finish it off. The strongest line of defense is a resistant cultivar.

Bored holes and crumbly brown tunnels worming through the fruit
The codling moth drops eggs that hatch into grubs, and each grub chews its way deep into a developing pear, leaving a crumbly brown trail behind it. Hang traps to catch the flight of the adults, then thin or bag the fruit and apply labeled controls on the right schedule. The window to act is early, before the larvae burrow out of reach.

Tacky, glistening leaves under a black sooty film
Pear psylla are minute sap-suckers that leave the foliage coated in sticky honeydew, and a black layer of sooty mold soon spreads across that film. A heavy infestation drains the tree of vigor. Build up natural predators, lay down dormant oil before the buds push, and turn to labeled controls only once the numbers spike.

Orange-brown speckles on leaves with aphids packed on tender shoots

Toxicity
The ripe flesh is a crisp, sweet fruit and safe to eat, but the rest of the tree is far from harmless. Keep pets and livestock away from the seeds and from any prunings, above all bruised or frost-killed foliage.

Cats Mild
A cat gnawing on the seeds or wilted prunings may show brick-red gums, blown-wide pupils, and heavy, labored panting. A real dose brings genuine distress, though the ripe flesh carries no threat at all.
Dogs Mild
Look for hard panting, dilated pupils, and bright red gums if a dog works at the bark, the prunings, or a mouthful of seeds. A dog that nibbles one crisp slice of ripe pear is almost always fine.
Horses Toxic
Horses graze in bulk yet react sharply to cyanide, and the usual cause is a heap of wilting prunings tossed over the fence rail. Labored breathing, staggering, and collapse can come on quickly, so the trimmings should never reach them.
Rabbits Toxic
Keep rabbits clear of the seeds, the bark, and any wilted leaves, because their small bodies are harmed by only a trace of cyanide. A thin shaving of ripe flesh on occasion is the one part that is safe.
Livestock Toxic
Cattle, goats, and sheep can poison themselves on fallen limbs or wilted leaves that blow into the pasture. The hazard climbs when the foliage is bruised or frost-killed, exactly the moment the cyanide load runs highest.
Birds Toxic
Pet birds and backyard poultry must never reach the seeds, which hold the same cyanide as the rest of the pip fruits. Give them only seedless pieces of the ripe flesh.
People Caution
The ripe flesh is crisp, juicy, and good to eat. Just leave the seeds alone, since chewing or swallowing a large quantity of crushed pips releases cyanide.
Keep pets from chewing large amounts of seeds, bark, or wilting prunings; the ripe fruit flesh itself is safe.

Varieties
Asian pears run to dozens of cultivars, sorted mostly by skin color, ripening date, and disease resistance. These are the ones you will run into most, and choosing two that bloom together settles your pollination in the same stroke.
Hosui
A prized top-grade pear bearing large, juicy, low-acid fruit with bronze skin that ripens mid to late August, and careful thinning swells each one larger still.
Shinseiki (New Century)
An early round pear in yellow-green skin over sweet, creamy white flesh; it sets some fruit alone but crops far heavier with a second cultivar close by.
Nijisseiki (Twentieth Century)
The most widely grown pear anywhere, valued for its clear yellow-skinned fruit yet among the quickest to succumb to fire blight.
Chojuro

How to propagate
There are two ways to start an Asian pear, but only one hands you the fruit you are after. Grafting copies a named variety to the letter, while seed is a gamble best left to breeders and rootstock growers.
GraftingModerate
This is how named cultivars stay true to type. A bud or scion of the variety you want is joined onto a pear or Asian pear rootstock, so the new tree fruits exactly like its parent. The cut takes a steady hand, but it is the one dependable way to copy a named pear.
SeedModerate
Seeds germinate easily enough, yet the seedlings stray from the parent and take years to set their first fruit. That is why seed is used mainly to raise rootstock or to breed new varieties, not to grow a tree whose fruit you can trust.
Myths
Asian pears have to be picked hard and ripened off the tree the way European pears are.
European pears do need that after-ripening, but Asian pears never do. They come into their best left to ripen on the tree, turning sweet and juicy right where they hang. You eat them crisp with an apple-like snap, never soft and buttery.
A lone Asian pear tree will set a full crop by itself.
Nearly every cultivar is self-incompatible, so a single tree on its own yields little or nothing. Plant a second compatible cultivar that blooms at the same time and let the bees ferry pollen between the two. That is the only way a real crop forms.
