Overview
An apple tree is something you plant for the long run. It sits in the rose family and has been crossed and grafted for thousands of years into the named varieties you see in the produce aisle. Set one in good ground and it can carry fruit for 30 years or more, becoming a permanent shape in the yard rather than a single season's project.
The thing that surprises most first-time growers is pollination. Most apple cultivars can't fertilize their own flowers, so a single tree blooms gorgeously and then sets almost no fruit. A real crop needs a second, compatible variety flowering at the same moment within reach of the bees, or a crabapple stepping in nearby. Count on two trees from the start, or confirm a neighbor's tree already does the job.
One last factor settles whether an apple will even thrive where you are: chill hours. The tree needs a run of winter cold to break dormancy and flower come spring, and each cultivar asks for a different amount. Pair the variety to your zone, give it sun and a yearly prune, and what's left is the patient business of letting a tree fill out.
Care

Troubleshooting
Most apple trouble turns up on the leaves, in the blossoms, or hidden inside the fruit, and the cool, wet weather of spring touches off much of it. Train your eye to the early marks and you can step in before a disease settles in for the season. Match what you see below, then act while it still does some good.
Scorched black blossoms and shoot tips bent into a shepherd's crook
When the blossoms and the soft new shoot tips wilt, turn black, and curl over into a hooked shepherd's crook as if scorched by flame, you are looking at fire blight. The bacterium tears through warm, wet bloom weather and leaves the wood looking burned. Cut out the infected growth 8 to 12 inches below the visible damage, and wipe the blades with disinfectant between every single cut so you don't carry the bacteria down the branch. Keep nitrogen low, since the soft, fast growth it produces is exactly what the disease feeds on.

Velvety olive-to-black blotches across the leaves and skin, leaves falling early
Those fuzzy, olive-green to black velvety patches spreading over the leaf surface and dimpling the fruit skin are apple scab, a fungus that stirs in cool, damp spring air and rides up from last autumn's fallen leaves. Sweep up and bag every leaf beneath the tree once it drops, thin the branches for moving air, and put down a protectant fungicide at bud break when spring turns wet. Scab-resistant cultivars spare you most of this work.

The bright orange to yellow spots dotting the upper leaf, often backed by little fringed tube-like growths on the underside, point to cedar-apple rust. Wormy apples riddled with tunnels and crumbly brown frass at the core
Cut an apple open and find winding tunnels packed with crumbly brown frass, plus a small entry hole punched in the skin, and you have met the codling moth. Its larvae drive straight for the core and leave the textbook wormy apple. Hang pheromone traps to catch the adults and time the sprays to egg hatch, thin the fruit, and clear off every dropped or infested apple so the next brood has nowhere to land. Bagging single fruit also works on a small backyard tree.

Toxicity
The ripe flesh of an apple is a wholesome snack for people and a fine treat for many animals.
