Overview
A carnivore in the genus Utricularia, family Lentibulariaceae, that catches its food underwater and grows wild on every continent but Antarctica. Some forms anchor in soggy ground as a low, creeping mat while others drift loose through still water, and all of them are studded with tiny bladder traps that snap shut on microscopic prey.
Look at one trap up close and it is a minute hollow sac that pumps itself empty, then springs back open in a fraction of a second the instant a passing protozoan or water flea brushes a trigger hair, sucking in water and prey together. That snap is how the plant pulls in the nutrients its nutrient-poor home denies it, which is exactly why feeding and fertilizing do it harm.
Care comes down to the physical conditions: the medium stays wet at all times with mineral-free water, the light stays bright, and the small plant is otherwise left to creep and fill in. Get the water right and everything else falls into place.
Care
The short version: bright light, distilled or rainwater only, a lean peat-and-sand mix kept wet at all times; never fertilize it, never let it go dry.
Light
It wants bright, indirect light and, once settled in, will take partial to full sun. Light is what drives the flower stalks up, so a mat that holds its green but stays bare is asking for more of it.
Water
Water settles everything else. Only distilled, reverse-osmosis, or rainwater keeps it alive, since tap or mineral water kills it. Terrestrial mats sit soggy in a tray holding 1 to 3 cm of pure water, aquatic forms drift submerged or loose at the surface, and the medium is never allowed to go dry.
Soil
The medium is a lean blend of peat and silica sand, close to half and half, carrying no nutrients at all. A pH of 4.0 to 6.0 keeps it in the acidic range it favors, and aquatic types root in no soil whatsoever.
Temperature
It sits easily across 50°F to 86°F (10°C to 30°C), a span that takes in ordinary room temperatures with margin on either side, so most homes will suit it.
Humidity
It leans toward humid air, around 50% to 80%. A standing-water tray under a terrestrial mat raises the moisture right around it, and aquatic forms are already submerged.
Feeding
It needs no feeding at all; the bladder traps gather every nutrient the plant requires from microscopic prey, and fertilizer usually finishes it off.
Pruning
Very little is called for; the spent flower stalks get clipped off and any dead or rotting mat is cleared away to keep the medium clean.
Repotting
Freshen it every 1 to 2 years as the peat crumbles and breaks down. Repot once the mat spills over the pot edges, the medium has decomposed, or vigor and flowering begin to slip.

It is a small plant, 2 to 12 inches (5 to 30 cm) tall, with a mat that creeps 4 to 12 inches (10 to 30 cm) across. A wide, shallow pot suits that spreading habit far better than a deep one.
Troubleshooting
Nearly every trouble traces back to water, light, or feeding. Match what you see to the cause beneath it; the answer is usually fresh water or a brighter spot. Caught early, the mat creeps back in on its own.
Mat Browning And Dying Back
When the spreading mat turns brown and caves in, the trail leads to mineral or salt buildup carried in by tap or hard water, or to a medium that has gone dry. Switch over to distilled, RO, or rainwater and pour it through the peat to wash the salts out. A tray kept topped up holds off any dry spell, since a single one knocks the plant back hard.

Soft Mushy Growth Turning To Rot
Growth that turns soft, mushy, and rotten almost always comes from fertilizer or nutrient-rich water the plant cannot handle, or from warm still water pooling around aquatic forms. These lean-living carnivores want feeding halted the moment you spot it. Lift the plant into fresh nutrient-poor peat and sand, then flush it through with pure water to bring it back.

Healthy Mat That Won't Bloom
A green, thriving mat that throws up no flower stalks is usually telling you it sits in too little light, or that minerals have crept into its water. Shift it to a brighter window or set a grow light over it, then run distilled or RO water through the medium to rinse out what has built up. Give it the light and clean water it asks for and the thin stalks will lift on their own.

Algae Smothering Aquatic Plants
On aquatic forms, a film of algae spreads across the water and clings to the stems whenever nutrients climb or strong light beats down on still water. Swap out part of the water for pure water and pull away any decaying matter, and the green retreats. Drop the light to a softer level and it stays gone.

- Reduce light intensity and remove decaying organic matter
Toxicity
Bladderwort is safe all around. The ASPCA does not list it among plants toxic to cats or dogs, and no extension or botanical source flags any danger to people or other animals; the traps catch nothing bigger than a water flea.
