Overview

Seen up close, Scots pine is a study in contrast: paired needles of a twisted, blue-green cast set against flaking orange-red bark that peels away in papery, cinnamon-toned scales. Each needle is slim, stiff, and sharp enough to prick, and they ride the twigs in twos. With age the crown loosens into a ragged, windswept outline, its limbs growing open and irregular. One of the most widely planted conifers in the world, it belongs to the Pinaceae family and grows wild across Europe and Asia.

Beneath that rugged surface is a genuinely tough tree. It grows fast, shrugging off cold as bitter as -40°F (-40°C), and its roots drive into dry, sandy, and poor ground where other trees stall. That hardiness is why it once stood in so many yards and tree farms.

The damage pests bring is written plainly on the tree. Pine wilt disease fades the needles from green to a dull yellow-brown and empties the wood of its resin, while tip blight and a few insects leave their own scars on a stressed tree. Kept clear of established wilt and in good health, this pine holds its blue-green crown and coppery bark for many years.

Care

The short version: Scots pine takes full sun and well-drained sandy or loamy soil on the acidic side, with little water once its roots are set. It seldom needs feeding, is pruned only in dry weather, and grows into a broad, open-crowned tree that needs real room.

Light

Scots pine burns for full sun and holds almost no shade. Starved of light beneath taller trees, its growth stretches thin and leggy, the needles sparse and the whole form weak and drawn.

Water

Once its roots take hold the tree runs drought tolerant, drawing on rainfall alone even in dry, sandy soil. A young tree still needs water through dry spells while its roots reach out, a deep soak roughly every 7 to 14 days, before it can go it alone.

Soil

Its roots grip well-drained sandy or loamy soil and take hold in poor, dry ground that starves other trees. The tree leans acidic, around pH 4.5 to 7.0, though a touch of alkaline soil leaves it unbothered.

Temperature

This is a tree of extremes. It stands firm from -40°F to 95°F (-40°C to 35°C), the deep cold at that low end carrying it far north into zone 2.

Humidity

Plain outdoor air is enough, so there is no reading to chase. Moving air counts for more, since still, damp conditions settle into the needles and feed the tip blight that browns the new candles.

Feeding

This is a light feeder that barely draws on the soil. An established tree keeps its blue-green color on no fertilizer at all, and only when growth thins does a single light balanced feed in spring help.

Pruning

Cuts stay few. Dead, damaged, or diseased branches, gray and brittle, come off in dry weather only, since wet-weather wounds spread Diplodia tip blight, though the tree takes shearing into a dense cone when grown for Christmas.

Repotting

Scots pine is a tree of open ground and is rarely potted for long. In a container, roots coiling out of the drainage holes, new growth pinched and stunted, and water rushing straight through show it has outgrown the pot and wants the earth.

This tree grows massive, its trunk lifting the crown 30 to 60 feet (9 to 18 meters) high and its limbs reaching 30 to 40 feet (9 to 12 meters) across. Give it that span from the start, clear of buildings and other trees, so the open crown can spread in full sun.

Severe

Whole branches fading to brown, the tree dead in a season

The color tells the story of pine wilt disease, a microscopic nematode that pine sawyer beetles carry from pine to pine. The needles drain from gray-green to a dull yellow-brown and hang on dead, and a cut trunk barely weeps resin. Nothing brings it back, so a confirmed tree must come down and be burned, buried, or chipped before the beetles cross to the next pine.

Fix:

  • No cure exists once a tree is infected
  • Promptly remove and destroy (burn, bury, or chip) dead and dying trees to eliminate beetle breeding sites
  • Do not leave cut pine wood on site, as it harbors the beetle vector
Setback

Sticky pitch beading the trunk, branches broken at the whorls

The pale, popcorn-like beads of pitch mark the Zimmerman pine moth, whose larvae bore under the bark where a branch joins the trunk. The gnawed crotch weakens until a limb or the leader snaps clean at a whorl. Cut out and destroy the tunneled wood, keep the tree in vigor, and where the moth is common, coat the trunk in mid-April and again in mid-August to catch the larvae before they sink in.

Setback

Chalky white specks on the needles that scrape away

The chalky flecks are pine needle scale, tiny white armored insects clamped to the needles, sucking sap until the green pales to a bleached, stippled gray. Strike the crawlers, the reddish nymphs that hatch in late spring, with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap, then again for the second brood in midsummer. Any branch crusted white gets cut out and destroyed.

Fix:

  • Treat crawlers (tiny reddish nymphs) with horticultural oil or an insecticidal soap in late spring
  • Repeat for the second generation in midsummer

Setback

Grayish larvae massed on last year's needles in spring

The grayish-green larvae packed shoulder to shoulder on the older needles are the European pine sawfly, chewing the mature foliage bare while the fresh tips stay green. Pick or prune off the clusters and destroy them, or blast the larvae loose with a hard jet of water. If they strip too much, an insecticide labeled for sawflies is the answer, since Bt does nothing to them.

  • Hand-pick or prune out clusters of larvae and destroy them

New candles browning and shriveled at the branch tips

This is Diplodia tip blight, a fungus that kills the soft new candles and leaves them short and brown, their stunted needles peppered with tiny black fruiting bodies, and a long wet spell can add the banded needles of Dothistroma needle blight. Prune and burn the infected twigs and cones in dry weather only, wiping the pruners with 10 percent bleach between cuts. Where it returns each year, spray fungicide from bud break through candle elongation.

  • Prune and destroy infected twigs, branches, and cones during dry weather only

Toxicity

Those sharp, twisted needles look more dangerous than they are. Scots pine is a true pine and not poisonous to cats, dogs, horses, or livestock. The real hazards are physical: needle tips that can prick a curious mouth and a sticky, resinous sap that can irritate skin or leave a stain.

Cats Safe

Scots pine carries no poison for a cat. The real risk is physical: the needle points can prick the mouth, and a little chewed greenery may bring a brief bout of vomiting before it passes.

A dog can mouth the needles with no fear of poisoning. The sticky sap and the stiff, pointed needles may irritate the skin or gums, and a large mouthful of foliage can churn the stomach for a short while.

Varieties

Watereri

A slow dwarf stalling near 10 to 12 feet, its stiff, twisted blue-gray needles bristling over bark that peels in orange-tinged scales.

Glauca

A selection carrying deep blue-green needles, their color the coldest, bluest cast of any common Scots pine.

How to propagate

Nearly every Scots pine grows from seed shaken out of its cones, and only the named forms, which will not come true, are grafted.

Most Scots pines drop from the cones that take two years to ripen from green to a woody gray-brown. The seed inside will not stir without a cold, moist spell, so it is sown in spring after stratifying. Over 2 to 3 years the seedling firms into a sturdy young sapling.

Myths

Myth

Scots pine needles cause abortion in pregnant animals.

Reality

Pine-needle abortion is real, but it belongs to ponderosa pine and a few close relatives whose isocupressic acid affects pregnant cattle, not cats, dogs, or horses. Scots pine is not the species behind it, and the ASPCA lists ponderosa pine itself as non-toxic to dogs and cats.

Myth

Scots pine is invasive and should never be planted in North America.

Reality

The USDA Forest Service marks it noninvasive in North America, even though it has naturalized in parts of the Northeast and Great Lakes. What thinned it from the trade was pine wilt and other pests, not any tendency to spread.
