Overview

Up close, a Colorado blue spruce shows stiff, four-sided needles coated in a powdery silver-blue bloom, arranged all around the twig like bottlebrush bristles. The tree builds a tight, symmetrical pyramid, its branches stacked in even tiers from a broad base to a sharp point. That frosted, prickly foliage comes straight from its home in the cool, dry central Rocky Mountains.

This is a slow-growing evergreen that thickens year by year. Over time the trunk stretches past 60 feet and the lowest branches sweep out 20 feet across, so it stands as a single bold specimen or a dense windbreak rather than a small shrub. Run a hand along a branch and each needle ends in a hard, genuinely sharp point, the spined texture that turns most browsing animals away.

The tree wears its silver-blue color through deep cold, hardy from zone 2 to zone 7, holding its needles where other trees go bare. Heat and humidity are what dull it. In a muggy southern garden the inner needles brown and the lower branches go thin and skeletal, so a cooler, more open site keeps the foliage full and the color clean.

Care

The short version: full sun, cool air, and rich, well-drained soil that never stays wet. Water it deeply while it is young, leave wide room for the branches to spread, and otherwise let the silver foliage fill in on its own.

Light

In full sun, ideally 6 or more hours a day, the needles pack densely along the twigs and take on their brightest, most powdery blue. Some afternoon shade is fine and even helps in hot regions, but in deep shade the foliage grows sparse and gaps open between the branches as the color fades to dull green.

Water

Young trees need deep watering and soil kept evenly moist but never soggy, since standing water is one of the few things that kills this tree outright. As the roots deepen, an older spruce turns fairly drought tolerant and largely fends for itself, though a deep soak through a long dry spell keeps the needles plump rather than dull.

Soil

It prefers rich, moist, well-drained loam, though it adapts to most soils as long as water drains freely through them. A pH anywhere from 5.5 to 7.0 suits it. The one thing it cannot survive is ground that stays wet, which rots the roots beneath the silver canopy.

Temperature

This cold-hardy mountain tree holds its needles from a bitter -51°F (-46°C) up to around 86°F (30°C). Heat, not cold, is the real limit. Sustained warmth and humidity stress the foliage and open the way to the diseases that brown and thin it.

Humidity

Blue spruce wants dry, airy conditions around its needles, not close, humid air. Damp, stagnant air settling among the dense foliage is exactly what lets needle-cast fungi take hold, so an open, breezy site keeps the needles clean and intact.

Feeding

An established spruce in decent soil rarely needs feeding to keep its color. A balanced slow-release tree fertilizer in spring covers a genuine shortfall confirmed by a soil test. Routine yearly feeding is unnecessary, since this tree neither needs nor wants it.

Pruning

Keep pruning to a minimum and never cut the central leader, the single upright shoot at the very top that drives the pointed pyramidal form. Remove only dead, diseased, or damaged branches, and do the work in late winter or a dry stretch so the open cuts do not invite Cytospora canker.

Repotting

A blue spruce belongs in open ground rather than a pot, so repotting rarely comes up beyond moving a young nursery tree into its permanent home. If one is held in a container, roots circling the inside of the pot or pushing out the drainage holes show it is ready to be planted out.

A mature specimen reaches 30 to 60 feet (9 to 18 m) tall, with the lowest tier of branches sweeping 10 to 20 feet (3 to 6 m) wide at the base. Give it that much open room and keep it well clear of buildings, walks, and power lines from the start.

When to plant

The needles stay on the tree all year, so there is no harvest to time, only the right season to plant. Set it out in spring once the soil has thawed, or in early fall while the roots still get warm weeks to take hold before winter. Avoid the heat of midsummer, when a freshly planted tree cannot keep its young roots supplied.

Troubleshooting

Trouble in a blue spruce usually shows first in the needles, in their color and texture, or on a single branch going brittle and bare, and much of it traces to heat, humidity, or waterlogged ground. Reading those early changes in the foliage lets you slow a problem before it spreads. Match what you see below, then act while it still helps.

Severe

Dying lower limbs and a chalky bluish-white resin caked on the bark

Cytospora canker settles on trees already worn down by drought or heat, killing one scattered lower branch at a time. The unmistakable sign is a hard, dry, bluish-white crust of resin caked on the bark near the base of a dying branch. No spray cures it, so the fix is to prune the dead wood out in dry weather, sterilize the tools between cuts, and keep the tree watered and mulched.

Fix:

  • Prune out and destroy infected branches during dry weather
  • Disinfect pruning tools between cuts
  • Repeat pruning over two consecutive seasons if needed
  • Reduce stress with mulch and watering during drought

Brown, purpling inner needles dropping as thin patches rise up the trunk

When the older inner needles turn brown to purple and fall while the tree thins from the lowest branches upward, the cause is usually needle cast, often the Rhizosphaera fungus working up from the bottom. Held under a hand lens, the needles carry rows of tiny black dots lined up along their length, marks a healthy needle never shows. Opening the tree for airflow, keeping the needles dry, and coating new growth with a fungicide for at least two seasons in a row fills the bare lower branches back in.

Fix:

  • Improve air circulation by spacing and selective thinning
  • Avoid wetting the needles with overhead sprinklers
  • Apply chlorothalonil, copper hydroxide, or mancozeb when new needles are about half their mature length, with a second application 3 to 4 weeks later, for at least two consecutive years
  • Remove and destroy fallen infected needles
Setback

The top shoot arching like a shepherd's crook, browning as it dies

When the topmost shoot droops over into a curled shepherd's crook and dies, the white pine weevil is at work, its larvae tunneling down inside that leader. In spring, last year's leader shows pin-sized holes beaded with droplets of sap. Cutting the dead leader out below the tunneled damage before the adults escape, then tying one straight side branch upright to take its place, rebuilds the pointed top.

Fix:

  • Prune out and destroy the infested dead leader below the larval damage in summer before adults emerge
  • Train a single straight side branch to become the new leader
  • Apply a labeled insecticide to the leader in early spring where weevil pressure is high

Pinprick-stippled, bronze-cast needles under a gauze of fine silk

Needles that go stippled, yellowed, then bronzed beneath a film of fine silk webbing point to the spruce spider mite, which swarms in hot, dry, dusty spells. Tap a branch over a sheet of white paper and the dislodged specks crawl across it. A hard jet of water blasts them off the foliage, and horticultural oil applied in the cool of spring or fall, while the mites are active, clears the haze.

Fix:

  • Hose down foliage with a strong stream of water to dislodge mites
  • Apply horticultural oil or a labeled miticide when mites are active in cool spring and fall
  • Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides that kill mite predators

Toxicity

For homes with pets or children, the blue spruce is not poisonous. The hazard lies in the needles themselves, each one tipped with a hard, sharp point that can scratch skin or poke a small child near the eyes. A pet that bites off a mouthful of the stiff foliage may get a brief upset stomach, but that is the extent of it.

Varieties

Most blue spruce grown in gardens are named cultivars, each picked for a particular shade of blue, density of needle, or final size and outline. A few show up far more than the rest, ranging from towering full-size trees to compact, tight-needled dwarfs.

Hoopsii

Hoopsii is a dense, pyramidal cultivar carrying the most intense silvery-blue needles of the group on a frame that reaches around 30 to 50 feet.

Fat Albert

Fat Albert builds a broad, full pyramid to a manageable 8 to 15 feet, its needles a vivid, even bright blue across the whole tree.

Baby Blue

Baby Blue is a semi-dwarf shaped into a smooth, even cone to about 15 to 20 feet, packed with closely set needles of silvery blue-gray.

Montgomery

Montgomery is a slow dwarf that mounds into a broad cone or globe just 2 to 3 feet across over years, its short needles tight against the stems.
