Overview
The Swiss cheese plant carries some of the boldest foliage of any houseplant. It comes from the rainforests of Central America, where it climbs tree trunks, and its glossy leaves grow broad and deep green, cut through with the holes and ribbons that name it. Mature blades can span a forearm, their surfaces slashed by long oval perforations and clefts that run in from the margin toward the midrib. It belongs to the arum family, alongside philodendrons and peace lilies, and shares their forgiving nature.
The leaf shape shifts dramatically as the plant grows up. A young monstera puts out plain, solid hearts with smooth unbroken edges, and only once it matures and gets enough light do the famous fenestrations cut through the blade. Those holes are thought to help the leaves shed heavy rain and let light filter to the foliage below, a fitting trick for a plant living under a forest canopy.
It grows fast and stays easy, which is why it suits a first-time grower. Thick green stems and pale, cord-like aerial roots reach out to grip a support, and with a moss pole to climb it can stretch to 6 to 10 feet (1.8 to 3 m) tall indoors. One thing to keep in mind: every part except the ripe fruit is an irritant, so place it out of reach of pets and small children.
Care
The short version: strong indirect light, a pole for the stems to grip, and a drink only when the upper layer of soil feels dry. Warm air, generous humidity, and monthly feeding in spring and summer keep the big split leaves coming.
Light
Give it bright, indirect light near a window but out of the harsh midday sun, which bleaches and scorches the glossy leaves. It puts up with medium light and some shade, but dim spots leave you with small, solid leaves and no splits.
Water
Wait until the top inch of the mix feels dry to the touch, then water deeply, which lands at roughly every 7 to 14 days. Slow the pace once fall and winter arrive and growth idles. Heavy, waterlogged soil rots the thick roots faster than anything, so lean dry when unsure.
Soil
The thick roots want a loose, peat-rich medium that lets each watering rush straight past them instead of pooling. Keep the pH between 5.5 and 7.0, and favor a chunky, open blend that never packs down tight.
Temperature
The plant holds steady between 61°F and 84°F (16°C to 29°C), warmth most homes supply without effort. Cold drafts make it sulk and frost kills it outright, so keep it clear of icy panes once winter sets in.
Humidity
Those big perforated leaves come from humid rainforest air, and a dry room slowly turns their edges brown and crackly. Cluster the plant among companions, run a humidifier nearby, or stand the pot over a tray of damp pebbles so moist air surrounds the foliage.
Feeding
A balanced liquid fertilizer once a month fuels the flush of broad new leaves while spring and summer growth runs. Pause across fall and winter when the plant rests, because salts pile up in soil that keeps receiving food a resting plant cannot use.
Pruning
Prune in spring to shape the plant or cut it back to size. The pale, rope-like aerial roots can be trained onto a moss pole, tucked into the soil, or trimmed off cleanly, whichever look you prefer.
Repotting
A fresh pot every 1 to 2 years, handled in spring, keeps pace with the root system; go one size up once roots wind in circles or poke through the drainage holes. Growth that stalls and water racing straight out the bottom also point to cramped roots.

Indoors it climbs to 6 to 10 feet (1.8 to 3 m) tall and spreads 3 to 8 feet (90 to 250 cm) wide, its broad leaves fanning out on long stalks. A sturdy moss pole keeps that growth upright and the heavy stems from snapping.

Most monstera problems trace back to watering or light, and the leaves show it early in their color and texture. Match what you see below to the likely cause, then fix it before it spreads.
Wilting plant with dark, mushy roots
A monstera that droops with limp, sagging leaves even though its soil is wet is showing root rot, brought on by overwatering or a mix that holds too much water. Slide the plant out, cut away any soft, blackened roots, and repot into fresh, free-draining soil. Water less often from there and the plant can recover.

Lower leaves turning yellow
When several of the older, lower leaves fade from green to yellow at once and the soil feels soggy, the cause is almost always overwatering or a pot that drains too slowly. Let the top of the soil dry before you water again, and make sure the pot can actually drain. A plant left sitting in wet soil heads toward root rot.

Fine webbing and speckled leaves
Faint silky webbing and a dusty, stippled speckling across the green point to spider mites, which thrive when the air turns hot and dry. Rinse the foliage off, raise the humidity to make the plant a poor host, and treat with insecticidal soap if they hang on. Checking the undersides of the leaves often catches them early.

Domed brown flecks and a tacky shine on the stems
Small brown, shell-like bumps clinging to the stems, often over a sticky glistening film, are scale insects feeding on the sap. Scrape or wipe them off, then coat the plant with horticultural oil to smother any you missed. Most arrive on a new plant, so look any newcomer over before it joins the rest.

Long stems slumping across the pot instead of rising
Out in the wild a monstera climbs, so indoors the thick stems flop and sprawl sideways when they have nothing to hold onto. Set a moss pole or trellis in the pot and guide the pale aerial roots onto it. Doing this early keeps the stems upright and saves them from snapping under their own weight.

Powdery white tufts and a gluey sheen across the leaves
White cottony tufts or a sticky glistening residue mean mealybugs, aphids, or thrips have moved in. Wipe the leaves clean and follow up with insecticidal soap, repeating until the pests are gone. Keep any new plant apart for a couple of weeks and check it over, since that is how most infestations start.

Smooth, hole-free leaves with no window openings
Two things leave the blades smooth and unbroken, and the first is simply youth. A young monstera makes solid, heart-shaped leaves and only starts cutting holes once it matures, so give it time. The other cause is too little light, so move it somewhere bright but out of direct sun and give it a pole to climb, which brings the splits on sooner.

Brown, crispy edges along the leaves
Dry indoor air is the usual culprit, and low humidity leaves the margins brittle and brown against the green. Salt left behind by fertilizer can do the same. Raise the humidity around the plant, and flush the pot through with plenty of plain water now and then to wash those salts out.

Toxicity
This is a plant to keep out of reach. Every part except the fully ripe fruit holds insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, microscopic needle-like shards that burn the mouth and throat the moment they are chewed. Pets, livestock, and children can all be hurt by a bite, and even the clear sap can sting skin and eyes, so wash your hands after handling it.

The crystals hit a cat's mouth the instant it bites, bringing sharp burning pain, heavy drool, frantic rubbing at the face, and sometimes vomiting. Lips and tongue may puff up until swallowing becomes a struggle.
Dogs Moderate
The sting lands the moment a dog's mouth closes on a leaf, bringing slobber, muzzle rubbing, and retching. A swollen tongue and lips can come next.
Horses Moderate
Those sharp crystals rake the mouth and digestive tract of a horse, setting off streams of drool and obvious unease. The harsh, bitter leaf usually gets spat out well before a real meal is made of it.
Rabbits Moderate
The crystals' sharp edges punish a rabbit's mouth, and the pain that follows usually puts the animal off its food. Placement far above floor level is the safest choice.
Livestock Moderate
The burn spreads across a grazer's mouth the instant foliage is chewed, drool following close behind. That acrid taste normally halts the animal at a single mouthful.
Birds Caution
A beak that tears into a leaf meets the same stinging irritation, so the plant and any pet bird should stay separated entirely. Perches and cages belong well out of range.

Varieties
Beyond the plain green species, a few prized variegated forms streak and fleck the foliage with white and cream. These are the ones worth knowing by name.
'Thai Constellation'
Up close the deep green blades look dusted with creamy white flecks, a starfield pattern held stable by the cultivar's tissue-culture origin, and the plant gains size a touch more slowly than the plain green species.
'Albo-Variegata'
Broad slabs of white and cream tear across the green, the work of an unstable chimera, so every leaf wears a different pattern and the blades run slightly smaller than those of the straight species.
'Variegata'
Assorted variegated plants shelter under this catch-all name, each showing patterned leaves that measure a shade smaller than the species' broad blades.
var. borsigiana
A tighter, smaller-growing form throughout, though modern botany lists borsigiana as one more label for Monstera deliciosa rather than a plant in its own right.
How to propagate
Making more monsteras is refreshingly easy, since one robust specimen carries the material for several new plants. Nearly every situation calls for one of two techniques.
Stem cuttingsEasy

Cuttings are the easy way to make new plants, and spring through summer is the time to take them. Cut a section that includes at least one node, ideally just below an aerial root, then stand it in water or push it into a moist mix. Give it 4 to 8 weeks and pale new roots take hold.
Air layeringModerate
Growing season · 6-8 weeks
Air-layering moves slowly but suits the growing season well. Pack a ball of wet sphagnum moss over a node where an aerial root emerges and keep the wrapping damp; in about 6 to 8 weeks fresh roots thread through the moss. Sever the section below them and give it a container of its own.
Myths
The monstera is a kind of philodendron.
The old trade name split-leaf philodendron lingers, but it is wrong. Monstera deliciosa belongs to the genus Monstera, not Philodendron, though both sit in the arum family Araceae and their glossy leaves look alike at a glance.
Misting the leaves makes them split.
Spraying water on the foliage does nothing to open the famous holes. Those splits, called fenestrations, come with age and good light as the plant matures, not from any amount of misting.
Aerial roots should always be cut off.
Those thick, pale roots reaching out from the stem are perfectly normal, and the plant uses them to climb. Train them onto a moss pole or tuck them into the soil, or trim them back if you prefer, since removing them does no harm.
Monstera fruit is poisonous.
Half of this belief holds up, and that is the tricky part. Green, unripe fruit stings the mouth with its calcium oxalate crystals, but a fully ripened one turns harmless, its flavor a blend of banana and pineapple.
Leaves riddled with more openings belong to a healthier plant.
Those openings record time and light, not diet. Dim conditions can leave even a richly fed plant with whole, unbroken leaves, so let steady new growth and deep leaf color tell the health story rather than the number of splits.
A leaf splashed with white needs exactly what a plain green leaf needs.
The white parts of a variegated leaf hold no chlorophyll, so the plant has less to work with. Give it brighter light and expect slower growth, because it simply cannot power itself the way an all-green plant can.
