Overview
Japanese anemone saves its show for late in the season, when soft pink and white flowers open at the tips of tall, wiry stems that lift them clear above the leaves. Each bloom is a shallow cup of rounded petaloid sepals set around a small central eye, and the flowers hang high enough that the least breeze rocks them on their thin stalks, the motion that earned the older name windflower. Below them sits a mound of dark, lobed foliage in the buttercup family, a plant that traces back to the scrub and streamsides of central and southwestern China.
This is a perennial that fills out slowly at first. A new plant spends its first year knitting roots below the crown and opening few flowers, then turns vigorous and creeps outward on fibrous suckering roots into wide, weaving colonies. Over the years the mounded clump broadens into a low sweep of foliage studded with those raised, swaying blooms.
What it wants is plain: part shade and steady moisture. Set in fertile, humus-rich ground that never dries hard, its slender stems climb toward flowering, and a stake steadies the tallest where wind reaches them. After frost blackens the leaves, a cut to the ground clears the old growth. Given that, the pink and white flowers carry from late summer into fall.

In its first year the plant sends its energy down into a fibrous suckering root system, a web of thread-like roots and creeping stems, before it shows much leaf or flower above the soil.
